Frio Town
News of the WorldFrio Town is a South Texas settlement in the brush country, situated within a narrative landscape where cattle gathering promises wealth but requires constant vigilance in a region described as having no law. It is also named in connection with a young relative of Wilhelm and Anna Leonberger who ran away toward the Nueces Strip.
Setting and Reputation
The novel places Frio Town south of San Antonio, in the brush country around the Nueces Strip. The area’s lack of law makes it a dangerous place to work: a cattleman had to stay alert, shoot well, and sleep lightly to survive long enough to profit. Its reputation is therefore practical as well as ominous. The same conditions that deterred most men also left room for someone capable of enduring them to gather wild cattle and make a small fortune.
People and Movement
Frio Town enters the story first through a report about Wilhelm and Anna Leonberger’s nephew. He had stayed with them but ran off south toward the Nueces Strip; Frio Town is named immediately afterward, linking the town to that direction of flight without describing the nephew’s subsequent whereabouts.
John Calley later decides to remain in South Texas and gather wild cattle in the area around Frio Town. He hires Ben Kinchlowe, a capable hand who speaks both English and Spanish and handles cattle and revolvers. Calley brands the cattle he gathers with a road brand and drives them north; after two trips, he has made his fortune. The account presents Frio Town not through a detailed view of its streets or buildings, but as the center of a hazardous working landscape.
Narrative Significance
Frio Town’s significance rests on the contrast between danger and opportunity. The surrounding lawlessness makes cattle gathering a test of vigilance and skill, yet the same isolation allows Calley to build wealth. Its brief mention in connection with the Leonberger nephew also places it on a route of departure into the Nueces Strip, while Calley’s later success makes the region a place where a newcomer can establish himself through repeated, risky work.
